As a former Interpreter Training Program (ITP) student, our founder spent years watching people in the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Low Vision communities struggle to access care — not because they weren't trying, but because the systems around them weren't built with them in mind.
That stayed with them. Combined with nearly 30 years of experience across multiple industries — and watching his son — a member of the LGBTQ+ community — struggle to find behavioral health support that truly understood him, a bigger picture became clear: the same skills, connections, and drive that helped one person find their way could be built into something much larger.
"I knew there was a need. I wanted to figure out a way to be the best ally and provide those services."
Founder, Open Path Support Services
We don't believe in one-size-fits-all. We believe in showing up — as a partner, an advocate, and a consistent presence in the spaces that have historically left people behind.
Whether you're navigating behavioral health for the first time, facing barriers because of how you communicate, or just need someone to walk alongside you — Open Path was built for exactly that moment.
Mother Mayes House is named in honor of our founder's mother — a woman whose greatest gift was her willingness to welcome anyone who needed a place to land. No questions asked. No conditions attached.
That spirit lives on in every resident who walks through these doors. Housing isn't just shelter — it's the foundation everything else is built on.
"She would open her doors to complete strangers if they were in need. This is a way to help carry her legacy on."
Founder, on the inspiration for Mother Mayes House
Safe, structured, supportive shared housing — built on the belief that everyone deserves a place to heal, grow, and move forward.
Our specialized focus is the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Low Vision communities — but our doors are open to everyone. We proudly serve the LGBTQ+ community, individuals in recovery, and the broader community throughout Maryland who are seeking behavioral health support.
If you've ever felt like the system wasn't designed with you in mind — whether you're Deaf, hard of hearing, low vision, LGBTQ+, in recovery, or simply looking for care that actually shows up — we were built for you.
